Mayuragi is an ancient name for the peacock.
On Ishigaki Island, many peacocks live in the wild, and at dawn and dusk they call out with a distinctive, far-carrying voice.
Peacocks are highly vigilant creatures and rarely appear close to people.
Yet their calls—strangely reminiscent of a cat’s meowing—mark the thresholds of the day, coloring the island’s landscape like a seasonal motif.
Ma-yuragi—“interstitial wavering”—is a noble presence, bearing a name as fantastical as its sound.
